Let’s Celebrate the Achievements of African Americans in Virginia & the United States
This month we honor and celebrate the contributions of African Americans in Virginia and our country. It is important that we explore and read books that help children understand diversity and equality. Take time to sit down and talk with your child about the achievements African Americans have made in our history. While the health crisis won’t allow us to do many of the activities and trips we would normally, there are still ways to show and tell your children about these accomplishments and heroes.

- Little Leaders: Bold Women in Black History
- Little Legends: Exceptional Men in Black History
- Little People, Big Dreams: Maya Angelou
- Visit the Emancipation Oak, where President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation was first read in the south. It’s outside!
- Take a virtual tour of the Freedom House Museum in Alexandria.
- Visit the National Museum of African American History and Culture for activities for early learners.
