One of our favorite books is Goodnight, Numbers by Danica McKellar. It turns everyday moments into math moments by sneaking fun math activities into everyday moments like reading, cooking dinner, or going to the grocery store. And it is a rhyming book too.
Here Are a Few Fun Ways to Sneak Math into Everyday Activities:
- Point to each object and count aloud.
- Count everything from buttons to snacks to wheels on a bike.
- Show numbers in word and the name of each number(Two is 2 with two objects).
- Look for other things to count on the page as you read.
- Sort items by color, shape, and size.
- Let your child use measuring cups, measuring tape, a yard stick or ruler to measure everything around them.
- Identify shapes(circles, squares, and triangles).
- Use words like this one is bigger or smaller.
- Talk about time and show numbers on the clock.
- Count jumping jacks or the stairs you climb.
- Ask questions about how many things are in the book(ducks, cookies, etc).
- Go on a shape or number hunt in the car, around the house or neighborhood.
