  • In 2014, 34% of Virginia’s children entered kindergarten ready to fail.[1]
  • In 2015, 36% of students entered kindergarten lacking readiness skills in at least one of the learning domains of literacy, math, self-regulation or social skills.[2]
  • In 2016, 40% of students entered kindergarten lacking readiness skills in at least one of the critical learning domains of literacy, match, self-regulation or social skills.[7]
  • The achievement and readiness gaps begin long before a child enters the kindergarten classroom. [3]
  • High quality early education can close up to half the achievement gap.[4]
  • Early education boosts the language, literacy and math skills of both low- and middle-income children.[5]
  • Investing in additional pre-K slots does not guarantee high individual and economic payouts. To make a difference, programs need to meet high standards and demonstrate practices proven to positively affect children’s development and school success. Policymakers must ensure high-quality standards are in place for state-funded preschools to follow.[6]
  • Even if a child experiences a high quality early education program but K-3 classrooms that the child attends lack quality, the achievement gains will fade out.
